Manager Ruben Amorim made a bold change to his starting XI, deploying Kobbie Mainoo in the number nine spot.

Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee found themselves surprisingly dropped to the bench.

The hosts began with a strong attacking intent, but Palace steadily gained control as the game progressed.

Jean-Philippe Mateta broke the deadlock after the hour mark.

Mateta sealed his brace late in the match, tapping home after Daniel Munoz delivered a perfectly timed assist.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 5/10

Onana helped United get away from a massive scare after his fantastic stop to deny Mateta before the break.

His positioning for the opening goal must be questioned.

Leny Yoro – 4/10

The teenager made a costly error, attempting to catch Munoz offside instead of staying tight to the attacker.

Harry Maguire – 5/10

Maguire was a towering presence at the back and won almost every aerial battle.

His fine evening turned into a nightmare when he played Munoz onside, leading to the second goal.

Lisandro Martinez – 6/10

It was unfortunate to see him go off injured after a string of superb performances.

His injury looked serious, which will leave Amorim with big concern.

Noussair Mazraoui – 4/10

Another afternoon reinforced the idea that Mazraoui is much better in the right centre-back spot than as a wing-back.

Diogo Dalot – 4/10

This should be his last start as a left wing-back. He offered nothing in the attack even when United dominated ball possession.

Manuel Ugarte – 6/10

The midfielder made crucial defensive actions and nearly grabbed the spotlight himself with a close-range effort that threatened to break the deadlock.

Bruno Fernandes – 5/10

The Portuguese maestro nearly caught Dean Henderson off-guard with a powerful first-time strike but struggled to inject creativity and spark into the game otherwise.

Alejandro Garnacho – 5/10

One of his most subdued performance in the recent weeks. He tried to take on Palace’s centre-backs but failed to get better of them.

Amad Diallo – 5/10

Diallo played a brilliant pass to Fernandes that could have resulted in a brilliant counter-attacking goal.

End product was missing from the winger as United looked short of ideas in the final third.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10

Mainoo started in an unfamiliar number nine role and enjoyed a bright start. He created a chance for Garnacho and saw his shot hit the woodwork.

He influence decreased after the opening half hour.

Substitutions

Rasmus Hojlund – 4/10

His heavy touch is a major cause of concern as he continues to struggle with the basics of football.

Joshua Zirkzee – 4/10

Another non-existent cameo for Dutch international.

Matthijs de Ligt – NA

Too late to rate.

Christian Eriksen – NA

Too late to rate.
