Manchester United executives have held talks with Atalanta about midfielder Ederson, according to Italian transfer expert Alfredo Pedulla on Sport Italia.
The club officials were in Italy to sort out some financial details concerning their move for Denmark international striker Rasmus Hojlund last summer.
They used the opportunity to make enquiries concerning Ederson. Man United have had the 25-year-old Brazil international on their radar for a while.
The Old Trafford club want to land a defensive midfielder this summer, and the Atalanta star fits the bill. However, they are not expected to make a concrete move for him right now.
Man United plan to return for talks over a deal for Ederson in the coming months and their cordial relationship with the Italian top-flight club could work in their favour.
They have attempted to lay a solid foundation for their move for the Brazilian, and it appears they have successfully done that.
Despite the impressive performances Casemiro produced during pre-season and against Fulham, Man United are preparing for a future without him.
They remain in talks with Paris Saint-Germain for Manuel Ugarte but will still look to sign Ederson even if a move goes through this summer.
The former Salernitana star played a huge role as his side won the Europa League last season and reached the final of the Coppa Italia.
He has played over 100 games since moving to Italy in January 2022 from Corinthians and would be a perfect player for Man United if they manage to land him in the future.
