Man Utd having ‘internal discussions’ over £40m ‘monster’; INEOS won’t have to pay the release clause | OneFootball

Manchester United are desperate to sign a new striker this summer, and Liam Delap could be an affordable option.

The Red Devils continue to be linked with some of the biggest names on the market, including Ruben Amorim’s old Sporting CP pupil, Viktor Gyokeres, as well as Victor Osimhen, who’s currently on loan at Galatasaray, but is expected to leave Napoli once and for all in the summer.

But while these players might be the club’s dream targets, they aren’t the only ones on Jason Wilcox’s shortlist.

For instance, United are keeping close tabs on Delap who is enjoying a solid first campaign in the Premier League, despite Ipswich Town’s top-flight struggles.

The 22-year-old started his career at Derby County before joining Man City’s youth ranks in 2018. He went on to represent the club’s U23 squad and also had loan spells at Stoke City and Preston, before sealing a permanent transfer to Ipswich last summer for around £15 million.

The striker has thus far netted 11 times in the Premier League this season, and has been described by his teammate Alex Palmer as a ‘monster’ for his notable physical attributes. He reportedly has a release clause worth £40 million.

Nevertheless, Man Utd insider Sully believes INEOS won’t have to activate the player’s buy-out, but instead work out an agreement with the Tractor Boys on more favorable terms.

“Understand United have made internal discussions regarding Liam Delap in recent weeks and looks like there’s definently ground to the stories that have been put out there recently and he’s high on the shortlist being heavily influenced by Wilcox,” posted the journalist on his X account.

“A possibility that I’m hearing is even if Ipswich get relegated, United may NOT pay the £40M release clause and propose a structural deal in instalments. A lot will depend on whether we get UCL Football or not.”

Liam Delap is the son of Stoke City folk hero, Rory Delap, who earned wide fame for his long throw-in during Tony Pulis’ memorable reign at Britannia Stadium.
