Manchester United have been dealt a hammer blow during an already difficult 2024-25 Premier League season after star defender Lisandro MartĂnez was ruled out for the rest of the season.
The Argentine centre-back went down over the weekend during the Red Devils' 2-0 loss at home against Crystal Palace after an awkward challenge on IsmaĂŻla Sarr.
MartĂnez was attended to by Man United medical staff on the Old Trafford pitch before being stretchered off in tears, but the club have now confirmed that the 27-year-old has suffered an ACL tear.
"Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro MartĂnez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace," read the club's statement on Thursday.
"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.
"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."
This offers another obstacle for Ruben Amorim to negotiate with Johnny Evans also sidelined through injury, as well as questionable performances across the back line.
MartĂnez has suffered multiple injuries during his time at United, and now looks set for another long stint on the sidelines.
