As reported today, Barcelona’s plans for the goalkeeping department next season hinge on Wojciech Szczesny’s renewal. While the sporting department is open to keeping him, the final decision rests with Hansi Flick.
If the 34-year-old Polish goalkeeper extends his contract and stays, Barça will not sign another custodian, given that Marc-Andre ter Stegen (32) is nearing full recovery and remains under contract until 2028.
In case he leaves, Barcelona have been monitoring a few goalkeeping targets and one of them happens to be FC Porto’s Diogo Costa.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City have also entered the race to sign Costa from Porto, posing a threat to Barça.
Highly rated at Barcelona due to his skill set, experience, and potential, Costa has already built an impressive resume at a demanding club like Porto, yet still has his best years ahead.

These long-term advantages are now also appealing to Manchester City, who are willing to invest significantly to avoid another frustrating season like the current one.
Costa’s release clause is set at €45 million, a figure that should not be an issue for Manchester City.
In addition, the goalkeeper has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
As things stand, there is nothing concrete as far as Barcelona’s interest in Costa is concerned. Everything will depend on how things evolve with Szczesny and his contract.
What appears to be certain is that Inaki Pena could be on the move in the summer transfer window having fallen out of favour under Flick.
