Pep Guardiola revealed today that Ruben Dias is set to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks with a muscle injury. The news of the injury suffered by Dias is yet another blow to Manchester City’s defensive stocks. That has been a common theme this season. Manuel Akanji, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias have all suffered from injury issues this season. With the January transfer window set to open in under two weeks, Manchester City now must buy a centre-back next month.
It has now gotten to that point. The injury situation that continues to plague City’s defenders is untenable. Pep Guardiola’s side can’t push on with the revolving door of defenders headed to the treatment table. There is no continuity in the Manchester City defence and the effects of that are clear to see.
Pep Guardiola’s side has been forced to play with either a makeshift defence or play players out of position to cover the loss of his defenders. Matheus Nunes played at left-back against Manchester United. Josko Gvardiol has rotated between centre-back and left-back in recent weeks. Kyle Walker has had to soldier on through the pain barrier and, at the same time, deal with his obvious decline as a player. Rico Lewis has played whenever he is available this season. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has debuted this season due to City’s injuries in defence.
Manchester City now must buy a centre-back next month. It’s almost as important as finding another midfielder or two next month. City’s injury situation at the back is now at that point. Whether or not it’s a player like Marc Guehi, Jarrad Branthwaite for example or another centre-back they must find one next month. It is imperative that they do. That is clear to see after today’s news.
