Manchester United’s search for a reliable number nine looks to be in full swing ahead of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have struggled in the final third this season, with both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to provide the consistency needed to lead the line.
In contrast, rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Newcastle United have all enjoyed goal-heavy campaigns — and the gap in quality up top has been glaring for Erik ten Hag's side. With Ruben Amorim expected to usher in a new era at Old Trafford, the club seem ready to act decisively.
According to journalist Patrick Berger, United have opened talks with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen over a move for Patrik Schick.
The 29-year-old striker has enjoyed an impressive season in Germany, scoring 17 goals in 26 appearances. It’s no surprise then that United have expressed interest in the Czech international, who could be available for a fee in the region of €25–30 million.
Despite Schick being under contract until 2027, Bayer Leverkusen are believed to be open to letting him go, partly due to Xabi Alonso’s tactical setup which leans more on mobile forwards.
That plays directly into United’s hands. With Hojlund’s future now uncertain and Amorim pushing for proven experience up top, Schick seems like a sensible, attainable target.
Former Czech Republic manager Jaroslav Silhavy once described Schick as a "genius" — and the stats certainly back that up this season. His efficiency in front of goal is exactly what Manchester United have lacked.
A recent report has suggested that the club are ready to offload Hojlund in the summer, and their interest in Schick makes perfect sense given their need for a complete number nine.
Discussions are expected to continue between the two clubs, and if the price is right, Schick could well be leading the line at Old Trafford next season.
