Manchester United are reportedly set to lock horns with Manchester City for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Palace placed their trust in the Englishman’s potential in 2024, securing his services from Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers in a deal worth £22 million.
The 21-year-old took little time to find his feet in England’s top flight, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting defensive midfielders.
The England international has earned plaudits for his tactical intelligence, line-breaking passes, and ball-carrying ability. Further, he is capable of playing all across the middle of the park. His technical prowess and maturity have put him on the radar of both Manchester giants, as per a report.
According to TEAMtalk, United and City are “building towards a major transfer battle this summer” as they look to add Wharton to their respective ranks.
Both sides are monitoring the Palace star’s progress and believe he could “grow into the next Declan Rice.”
With veteran midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen expected to depart in the summer, United could do with a player like Wharton.
City, meanwhile, are in the process of rebuilding Pep Guardiola’s squad on the back of what has been a frustrating campaign.
However, it is going to be very difficult for the two sides to find an agreement with the Eagles, as Wharton is tied to the club until the summer of 2029.
It is understood that Wharton is valued at £70million by Palace — a sizeable fee for a midfielder who is still relatively inexperienced at the top level and has struggled with fitness issues this term.
Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils are yet to find an agreement with his representatives over a new deal.
Mainoo’s possible exit could hand United funds to make a high-profile midfield signing but such a development is likely to please the supporters.
