Spurs raced into a three-goal lead thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke (two) and Dejan Kulusevski, before goalkeeper Fraser Forster gifted the visitors a way back into the game, with Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo scoring after his woeful distribution.

United’s own goalkeeper than made a blunder of his own, conceding a direct corner to Son Heung-min.

There was still time for Jonny Evans to half the deficit again, but it wasn’t enough and it ended 4-3.

Dom Smith was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to rate the Manchester United players’ performances…

Altay Bayindir 3

Horror night for the goalkeeper. Conceded four goals, including a direct corner by Son. Given a yellow for protesting he had been fouled. Eesh...

Victor Lindelof 5

Came off in the 45th minute due to injury and went straight down the tunnel, looking distraught.

Leny Yoro 6

Good display from the Frenchman, not directly at fault for United’s poor defending. Threaded some nice passes into midfield.

Leny Yoro was the best of Man United’s defenders

Noussair Mazraoui 5

Poor late tackle on Djed Spence saw him pick up a yellow card in the first half.

Lisandro Martinez 4

At fault for the second goal as his lackadaisical half-clearance fell to Kulusevski to convert with ease.

Diogo Dalot 5

Anonymous display by the Portuguese wing-back, whose positioning often gifted Spurs space to run into.

Bruno Fernandes 6

A very quiet evening for the skipper, but he did read Fraser Forster’s poor pass out and then assist Zirkzee.

Manuel Ugarte 6

The game seemed to happen to him. Needs to offer so much more, after United forked out £42million to sign him.

Christian Eriksen 6

The best United performer until he was replaced on 56 minutes. Without much luck, at least he tried to make things happen against his former club.

Antony 5

Had one shot, probably heading in, which was blocked. Other than that,

Bullied by Radu Dragusin all night. United got back into the match, but not thanks to the Dane.

Subs:

Jonny Evans (Lindelof 45’) 6

Nutmegged by Solanke for the third of Tottenham’s goals. Came on just before the interval after an injury to Lindelof. Scored late on with a fine header from a corner.

Amad Diallo (Antony, 56’) 6

Came on and definitely made an impact, taking plenty of shots, but was a tad wasteful in front of goal, despite closing Forster down to score.

Joshua Zirkzee (Hojlund, 56’) 6

Posed Tottenham a different problem. Scored the goal (a tap-in) that got them back into the game.

Kobbie Mainoo (Eriksen, 56’) 5

Did okay but struggled to keep the inspired Kulusevski at bay.

Not used: Onana, Maguire, Malacia, Garnacho, Casemiro
