Onana was dropped from the Man Utd squad for the Premier League defeat to Newcastle at the weekend with Amorim explaining the decision was to take the goalkeeper out of the firing line.

The Cameroon international had made two costly errors leading to goals in the first leg of Man United’s Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon.

But after being given some time off to “disconnect”, Onana is set to reclaim his place in between the sticks from Altay Bayindir on Thursday as the Red Devils seek to seal a place in the Europa League semi-final.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Amorim said: “Onana will play tomorrow.

I just think first of all as a coach, and also as a former player, I try to do things that can help a player in this situation. So sometimes we talk about managing players physically, we have to manage them also mentally.

“But then, they have to return to competition and Onana is ready.

“He had one weekend that I felt it was better for him to not play, and a good thing for Altay, and this week, my thinking was to put Onana to play.”

Amorim has also revealed that Joshua Zirkzee will not play again this season after being forced off with a hamstring injury against Newcastle.

"Joshua is out for the season,” the Man United boss added. “He is not going to play anymore this season. We must prepare him for next season. It is hard for any player to stop, but it's football. He has to be ready to recover.”

Concluding the injury update, Amorim revealed that Ayden Heaven has had a small setback and will miss the Lyon clash along with Matthijs De Ligt, Amad Diallo and Jonny Evans who returned to training on Wednesday.

He said: "Matthijs will return. Ayden has a small setback. Jonny Evans is back in training but he is not back for this game.

“Amad, he is not ready for this month. But I hope to have him for this season.

"He [De Ligt] is going to return before the end of the season. He has some pain. He finished the game against Nottingham Forest. He is really working hard, he is a tough guy. We hope to have Matthijs in the next weeks."
