Manchester United appear to be readying themselves to make a move for Fiorentina’s Pietro Comuzzo this summer.

Following Lisandro Martinez’s long-term injury and the fact that Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans are ageing, Man United appear to be in need of further defensive reinforcements, especially since manager Ruben Amorim makes use of three centre-backs in his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

This issue has been amplified by the injury of rising star Ayden Heaven.

In January, The Peoples Person relayed that United and Paris Saint-Germain expressed an interest in the Fiorentina player.

Now, it seems as if Amorim may be accelerating his pursuit of the Serie A defender, potentially moving to secure his signature this summer as CaughtOffside reported this morning.

“According to Caught Offside sources, Man United scouts have been following Fiorentina defender Pietro Comuzzo’s performance for some time and the Red Devils may be considering the Italian defender as a long-term solution,” the report read.

“With the Red Devils looking to make significant changes to their squad in the summer transfer window, they are already in the process of identifying their targets.”

“Clubs such as Tottenham, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Arsenal are watching him closely, impressed by the player’s knowledge of the game and passing skills,” the article went on to mention, suggesting that competition is heating up in the race to sign Comuzzo.

Comuzzo has emerged as a key player for Fiorentina this season, which is eighth in the Serie A table, just five points clear of a spot in the UEFA Champions League.

The Italian has averaged 1.4 tackles, 3.5 clearances, and 2.7 ball recoveries per league game.

He has also done well to utilise his physicality at the back, winning 59% of his total duels.

Comuzzo has been even more impressive in the UEFA Europa Conference League, winning 65% of his total duels, including an exemplary 78% of ground duels. (Stats via Sofascore)

Should the defender cost in the region of €35m to €40m as reports suggest, it might be worth United’s time to make a bid for the 20 year old, who could be molded into the type of player that Amorim could utilise in his system for years to come.
