Inter President Beppe Marotta admits the change of coach has ‘galvanised’ Milan ahead of the Supercoppa Italiana Final, but he hopes to make history despite injury concerns.

It kicks off at the Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh at 19.00 GMT.

This is the second season using the Final Four format, with Inter beating Atalanta 2-0 and Milan’s 2-1 comeback victory over Juventus in the semi-finals.

If the score is level after 90 minutes, they go directly to a penalty shoot-out, so there will be no extra time.

“This is the first trophy of the season and in our DNA is the need to pick up as much silverware as possible. We earned our place in the Final, we are prepared and determined, well aware it is a local derby played thousands of kilometres away from Milan, but the spirit must be the same,” Marotta told Sport Mediaset.

Marcus Thuram picked up a muscular injury in the 2-0 semi-final victory against Atalanta and is therefore only on the bench, so Mehdi Taremi steps into the starting XI.

“We have a large squad with 24 players who we like to refer to as co-starters. Thuram is a very strong player, but whoever replaces him will do everything he can to live up to those standards.

“The team must never depend on one player, but on the collective.”

Milan beat Inter 2-1 back in September when they met in Serie A, but are now under a new coach after Sergio Conceicao defeated Juventus on his debut.

“In terms of motivation, we are well aware that the win over Juventus gave Milan a huge boost and galvanised their confidence. That could be an important element, but after that we must take control of the match and Simone Inzaghi has already studied the new coach. The result will ultimate depend on both their performance and ours.”

While Inter have been racking up the silverware in recent years, that was with Marotta as the CEO, whereas this could be his first trophy as President of the club.

“That is exciting and would be wonderful, but we know that winning it is not going to be easy. We hope to celebrate this evening.”
