On Thursday evening, Tottenham Hotspur were in action up in the North West, as they faced Premier League runaway leaders Liverpool at Anfield, for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi finals. Coming into the game, Spurs had a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg.
For the task at hand, Ange Postecoglou opted for a line up of; Kinsky; Gray, Danso, Davies, Spence; Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr; Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son.
After 27 minutes, Danso made an absolutely sublime block to deny a Cody Gakpo effort from inside the box. From the follow up, Gray did well to block a powerful effort from Darwin Nunez - which was checked and cleared for a handball.
30 minutes in, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead on the night, when Dominik Szoboszlai converted a Mohamed Salah through ball, but the Hungarian international had ventured into an offside position.
However, after 34 minutes, they did take the lead. A cross from the right hand side fell to Gakpo at the back post, whom squeezed an effort into the near post. It came from Yves Bissouma misplacing a simple pass - just to make a change.
So many times before then Spurs had ruined a presentable opportunity by misplacing a pass. Chasing the tie up until that point, Liverpool had plenty of space, which Ange's side continued to fail to exploit.
With two minutes of normal time remaining in the first half, a Salah shot into the ground was expertly tipped over the bar by Kinsky. Before the corner was taken, Richarlison had to be replaced, and on came Tel for his Tottenham Hotspur debut.
That would be that, and the sides would go into the break with Liverpool 1-0 ahead on the night, and the sides level at 1-1 on aggregate.
Three minutes into the second half, Liverpool had a penalty after Kinsky brought down Nunez. Really poor from Davies. Salah converted from the spot.
After 56 minutes, Bergvall and Porro replaced Sarr and Bissouma. On 63 minutes, Gakpo hit the post from a tight angle, where he probably should have squared it. Just such a bad performance from Spurs.
With a quarter of an hour to go, Szoboszlai made it 3-0. There is no shame in losing to a juggernaut Liverpool side, there is shame in such a pathetic performance. This competition is a chore for Liverpool, their focus is on other competitions. This is Tottenham's biggest game since 2021, and look at the difference. Embarrassing.
There were ten minutes remaining when Virgil Van Dijk made it 4-0. Fair play to any Spurs fan watching on TV that hadn't switched to the Darts. Two minutes later, Moore replaced Davies.
So, things hinge now on the FA Cup. A competition with Liverpool, Man City (even in their current state), Newcastle United still remaining. Oh, and they have to go to Aston Villa, not even 72 hours after this game, with Villa having the week off. In fact, Spurs have played twice since they last played. Nice!
After that, there is still the Europa League. A competition where Spurs have already failed to beat Galatasaray, AS Roma, and Galatasaray. A competition where they needed a penalty to beat AZ Alkmaar. A competition where they beat Ferencvaros by one goal. Hoffenheim by one goal. Etc.
Imagine what will happen when they face the likes of Athletic Club and Lazio. No chance. This team is completely and utterly spineless. Another year without a trophy. That is seventeen years and counting.
