The FA has issued Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha an additional one-match suspension and a £50,000 fine following his sending-off against AFC Bournemouth in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round earlier this month. Currently with the Brazilian national team, Cunha will now serve a four-match suspension, his second of the season.
"An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a one-match suspension and a £50,000 fine on Matheus Cunha.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward was charged with acting in an improper manner after he was sent off around the 121st minute of their FA Cup tie against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, 1st March.
The player subsequently admitted the charge. The Regulatory Commission imposed his sanctions following a hearing, and its written reasons for them will be published in due course.
Matheus Cunha will now be suspended from domestic football until Sunday, 13th April."
As a result, the Brazilian will miss Wolverhampton's upcoming Premier League matches against West Ham United and Ipswich Town. He was already sidelined for games against Everton and Southampton, the latter of which extended Wolves' lead over the bottom three to nine points. Cunha will be eligible to return for their home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux.
Cunha was heavily linked with a move away from Wolves in the January transfer window, but much to the delight of the fans, he remained at the club. In February, he signed a new contract, though Wolves’ hopes of keeping their top scorer appear slim. His new deal includes a £62.5 million release clause, ensuring the club would receive a substantial fee should he depart.
Wolves currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, with Cunha leading their scoring charts with 13 goals. The 25-year-old was recently called up for Brazil's World Cup qualifiers and played the final 30 minutes in their 2-1 win over Colombia on Thursday night in Brazil (Friday morning in the UK).
Cunha is one of the most popular forwards in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), ranking among the top 10 most-picked strikers. His additional suspension will impact FPL managers who planned to select him for Wolves' clash against Ipswich. In the reverse fixture, despite Wolves' defeat, Cunha was on the scoresheet and secured full bonus points.
