MIAMI – Costa Rican international Melissa Herrera entered the exclusive club of players with 100 matches.

The latest international window marked some milestones in women’s football, one of them happening on Tuesday, as Melissa Herrera reaching 100 appearances with the Costa Rica senior women’s national team in a 2-1 win over Peru.

The 27-year-old forward is a recognized name in Costa Rican women’s football. She has been part of Las Ticas since her youth days, representing her country at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

She has earned a two gold medals as part of the Costa Rica team that won the Gold Medal at the Central American Games on two occasions. The first one happened on home soil in 2013 and the second in 2017 when the games were hosted by Nicaragua.

Herrera made the squad for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the first time La Sele would play in the most prestigious tournament in women’s football, scoring one goal in a draw against South Korea in the Group Stage.

She would show up again on the scoresheet at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, scoring Costa Rica’s only goal in the tournament in their last match of the group stage against Zambia.

Herrera boasts a record 24 senior goals in total. Her skills and determination on the national team helped her make the jump abroad.

She ventured to France as part of State de Reims from 2018 to 2021, helping the club return to the first division in 2019, before featured for Girondins de Bordeaux from 2021 to 2023.

Now suiting for Club Tijuana in Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil, Herrera has proven these 100 caps are only the continuation of her journey.
