FLW takes a look at three strikers who Boro could look to replace Kelechi Iheanacho with this summer.
Kelechi Iheanacho's loan move to Middlesbrough hasn't worked out, and the Nigerian will surely return to La Liga side Sevilla with no prospect of a permanent Boro transfer.
The 28-year-old hasn't been able to fill the goalscoring void left by Emmanuel Latte Lath at the Riverside Stadium since arriving in the winter transfer window.
Iheanacho has come under large scrutiny by Boro supporters for his performances in the second half of the season, which in truth, have largely seen him failing to make an impact in games.
Therefore, Middlesbrough must find an upgrade on the former Leicester and Manchester City forward in the upcoming summer window, and as such, Football League World takes a look at three strikers Boro should consider to replace Iheanacho this summer.
Aside from the goals he scored, the key attribute that Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough side lost upon the sale of Latte Lath was raw pace and speed in attack.
However, in Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone, they would certainly reinstall both of those traits into their side.
The 21-year-old has been a goalscoring revelation for the Chairboys this season, and has firmly established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the EFL.
Those are the sorts of players Middlesbrough will undoubtedly have on their radar, as under the tenures of Carrick and head of football Kieran Scott, a clear emphasis has been placed on bringing talented young players to the football club.
Kone has already been linked with a move to Teesside by journalist Graeme Bailey, and he looks to be a player who is only scratching the surface of his ability and potential.
Therefore, he could set Boro up for a significant payday in the future, despite the fact that it would surely take a sizeable fee to prize him away from Adams Park this summer.
Middlesbrough are always keeping their ear close to the ground when it comes to talented young Premier League starlets that could be available for loan.
One such prospect that could fit that bill in the summer is Chelsea striker, Marc Guiu.
The 19-year-old Spanish youth international looks to be a centre-forward with bags of ability and potential, having graduated from Barcelona's fabled La Masia academy system.
Guiu made seven first-team appearances for Barcelona last season, before signing for Chelsea last summer in a deal worth a reported £5m.
The teenager has made a handful of Chelsea first-team appearances during his debut season at Stamford Bridge, and has found the net numerous times during the Blues' UEFA Conference League campaign.
But, given the competition for game-time in Enzo Maresca's squad being fierce, there may not be much harm in Chelsea loaning their young striker out for a season, and getting him invaluable senior experience.
Middlesbrough were understood to have been interested in taking Guiu on loan in the winter window, but no such move materialised. But with the Chelsea youngster potentially being a class above at Championship level, they may be wise to test those waters again in the summer.
The Swiss Super League is evidently a division that Middlesbrough are tuned into, as despite being an Atalanta player, Latte Lath failed to make a single appearance for the Serie A side, with his form on loan at St. Gallen being a driving force behind Boro splashing out on him in 2023.
The Swiss side have clearly found a knack for having a prolific centre-forward in their side too, and this time, his name is Willem Geubbels.
A former French youth international, the 23-year-old was once one of Ligue 1's most exciting young talents, having made his debut in that division aged just 16 back in September 2017.
Since then, he broke into AS Monaco's first team side during the 2020/21 season, before spending the 2021/22 campaign on loan with Nantes.
From there, he would leave Monaco to join St. Gallen in January 2023, and after a modest 2023/24 season that saw him bag eight goals and five assists in 33 total appearances, the Frenchman has enjoyed a far better scoring season this term.
Having already hit double figures by the end of January, the goalscoring penny may well have finally dropped for Geubbels, who had been linked with a number of Championship sides in the winter window.
As such, he could be ready to test himself in English football next season, and if so, Boro may well want to throw their hat into the ring.
