Mike Tullberg is set to be promoted to U23 coach. According to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Berger, the Dane settled in staying at the Signal Iduna Park with an already settled three-year contract and is set to succeed Jan Zimmermann. The news of his likely stay, published this week, was further confirmed this morning.
With rumors surrounding his departure in the summer, Tullberg ultimately decided to remain at Borussia Dortmund. The U23 team, to which Tullberg will be reassigned, is fighting against relegation in the 3rd division and will be given greater priority in the future. The Dane will be responsible for coaching some well-known names that the manager recognizes from his time at the U19s and his youth days.
However, despite some speculation that Tullberg might be closer to a first-team role, the board isn't intended to give him a role of a kind of "shadow coach." While the bosses, especially Ricken, who convinced the Dane to stay, highly value him, there are no plans for him to take over the first team if Kovač were to leave, according to Berger.
Despite the initial plan to retain Tullberg in the youth teams, his further development will be closely monitored and watched within the club. There is no certainty that Tullberg would not be adjusted to the first team in case of a sudden change in the status quo; however, that is not the board's idea, as Niko Kovač seems to be finally settling in Black and Yellow.
I would prefer for Tullberg to develop and prove his potential in first-team football elsewhere, and then return to the Westfalenstadion, which may still happen in the near future. However, it is also beneficial to keep talented professionals nearby and observe their growth in a higher hierarchical role, which he is totally entitled to.
