Serie A giants Milan have reportedly reignited their interest in prodigious River Plate forward Franco Mastantuono amid Real Madrid speculation. According to Spanish outlet Marca, Los Blancos’ interest cooled after the youngster renewed his contract at the Monumental.

Widely considered among the hottest South American prospects, Mastantuono has attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Milan. The Rossoneri approached the River Plate whizz-kid to put down the groundwork for the 17-year-old’s arrival last March.

However, negotiations with the player’s camp never gained momentum, with Milan ultimately shifting their attention to other targets. Furthermore, Barcelona hoped to challenge the Italian powerhouse for Mastantuono’s signature. Yet, their financial turmoil rendered the deal impossible.

In the meantime, Mastantuono has penned a new contract with his boyhood club. River Plate inserted a substantial €45 million release clause in the teenager’s new agreement. New terms have deterred Real Madrid from pursuing a deal for the Argentine playmaker.

Madrid’s withdrawal could pave the way for Milan. Paulo Fonseca’s men could take advantage of the new circumstances to lure one of the most sought-after talents to Stadio San Siro. But they probably won’t make a move before the end of the season.

In addition to Mastantuono, Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera has caught Milan’s eye. Milan are in the market for a new center-back after Fonseca deemed Fikayo Tomori surplus to requirements. Indeed, the Englishman has tumbled down the pecking order and could leave the club in the January transfer window.
