In the past few years, AC Milan have consistently looked to improve or alter their midfield, and whilst this may continue, the Rossoneri have a fantastic base.
Throughout last season, Milan struggled with their midfield, in pretty much every way. Not only was there a lack of balance, but the Rossoneri also struggled to rotate enough, and when injuries occurred, things only became worse.
In some ways, the same could be said for this season, just without the struggle. The Rossoneri have one of the best midfield’s in Serie A, thanks to two of the best midfielders – however, it could be argued that there is still a lack of balance, whilst the depth problems are still at the forefront.
This is why the Diavolo are planning to target the midfield in the January mercato, according to Pietro Mazzara. Unlike previous windows though, there is not a need to get the midfield ticking, but rather keep it going.
As Milan News write, the current duo of Tijjani Reijnders and Youssouf Fofana are superb, and they provide a superb amount of balance, hence why the report suggests that they have been ‘given the keys’ of Milan’s midfield.
Paulo Fonseca’s trust in them is clear, and with both excelling in their own right, it is no surprise why this is the case. After all, Fofana, alongside Reijnders, has shown that ‘he is capable of completing the tactical side as well as the dynamic side’, which is an issue that has troubled the Diavolo heavily in recent years.
