AC Milan needed to beat Inter last night to keep their season alive, and it will once again be on the line in just under three weeks.
As MilanNews write, with the clear 3-0 win over Inter, Milan have given themselves the chance to win a second trophy in Rome on May 14. It was an opportunity obtained thanks to a brace from Luka Jovic, a penalty area killer and the star of the show at San Siro, and Tijjani Reijndes.
With this final, Milan have the chance to make a disastrous season less bitter. Furthermore, in the event of a victory next month, they would automatically earn a spot in the Europa League and it would add a bandage of sorts.
The Champions League is no longer possible to reach, but accessing the second-most important competition in Europe would save some face and also help the club’s accounts.
In fact, remaining for a year without any European competition would mean losing out on revenues that are fundamental for the club’s ambition to maintain self-sustainability.
Therefore, the last resort is the Europa League and to reach it the Rossoneri must beat Bologna in the Coppa Italia final, something that will not be easy given that they are far ahead in the table.
Furthermore, by getting to the showpiece in the capital, Milan have also ensured participation in the next Supercoppa Italiana that will be played at the beginning of 2026 with a venue yet to be decided.
More Stories / The Match
The Rossoneri get more satisfaction by effectively canceling Inter’s chances of winning the treble. Now at most the cousins will be able to aspire to two trophies (they are in the running for the Champions League and the Scudetto), a small consolation in a year in which many things have gone wrong.
But there is a mystery surrounding the Milan team and it concerns the derbies. In a year in which they have lost against many teams (10 defeats in the league), they have never lost a match against Inter.
In the five instalments of the Derby della Madonnina in 2024-25, including the cup competitions, Milan have won three and drawn two. The taboo now seems to be Inter’s.
Simone Inzaghi himself applauded his opponents at the end of the Coppa Italia match: “Congratulations to Milan who wanted the final more than us. In the five derbies this season they have always put us in difficulty.”
