Will Portuguese head coach Sergio Conceição make an unlikely comeback in Nantes’ dugout? According to a report from Ouest-France, Nantes owner and president Waldemar Kita is in advanced talks with the former Portugal international winger to take over from Antoine Kombouaré if Nantes’ results do not improve. Conceição joined a badly struggling Nantes side in 2016 and spectacularly turned the club’s fortunes around, leading Nantes to a respectable 7th-place finish and earning a contract extension, tying him to Les Canaris until 2020.
But he never honored his Nantes contract after answering the call of his formative club, FC Porto. With the Dragons, Conceição won three league titles (2018, 2020, 2022) and four Taça de Portugal (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024). Conceição is now a free agent after resigning from his position amid changes at FC Porto with André Villas-Boas named president.
Ouest-France understands that talks are underway for a week now between Nantes and Conceição, the latter is reportedly interested in making a return to the Ligue 1 side. Get French Football News understands that current Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré would have likely been sacked had Nantes not rescued a point last Saturday against PSG, which would explain why, according to Ouest-France, Kita seemed less than impressed with Nantes’ result in the Parc des Princes’ away locker room.
