Napoli were interested in Lewis Ferguson in the past and they are ready to rekindle such a chase next summer, especially should Frank Anguissa leave. The midfielder was on the radar of several big teams before tearing his ACL in April, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The injury nipped every negotiation in the bud. He returned fairly quickly and has been able to log 20 appearances so far this season. He was handled carefully at first, but he has seen full minutes and has been one of the top performers for his side in the past month or so.

Napoli will try to add Ferguson to their collection of Scotsmen, which already features Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour. They’ll take another close look at him in Monday’s meeting versus Bologna.

The Partenopei will need to wait to know whether Anguissa will stay or leave. They activated a two-year option to extend his contract to have time to bargain a longer and richer one. However, he hasn’t answered their offer yet and is buying time.

Our Take on Napoli and Ferguson

He renewed his deal not too long ago, but his wages are low relative to what he could pocket in a big team. Bologna rarely clip their players’ wings, provided the offers are worthy. They have often sent them to the Premier League to cash in fully. He’s an easy fit for any team given his versatility, muscularity, leadership, and intelligence. They should target him regardless of the future of Anguissa. He wouldn’t be so cumbersome and expensive to have to be necessarily a linchpin for them.
