After grabbing three points against Liverpool, the Aston Villa Women will feel emboldened to keep building off their latest result. It ended up being a narrow 2-1 victory, but in truth, a loss would have been completely undeserved, and a draw would have been something of a missed opportunity.
Both sides naturally had chances. Natalia Arroyo's side, however, had more of the clear-cut chances and looked more imposing in the attack, particularly in the second set of 45 minutes. After a number of matches in which a ball couldn't bounce their way, it ended up favoring them and gave a well-earned reward to AVWFC.
The Spanish manager has discussed the need to improve and how grabbing wins was something of a secondary aspect before. Not in an attempt to downplay the meaning of the three points; after all, she could be seen celebrating after the full-time whistle against the Liverpool Ladies.
Instead, she is imposing her viewpoint of needing to focus on how to ensure the positive results come more frequently. With the long international break, the step away from the regular action comes at something of an inopportune time.
Even if Villa hadn't managed to score a second goal, the philosophies and vision of Arroro were once again present, as they have been for a number of matches. This is a team whose position in the table doesn't quite tell the true story. With a game against Tottenham in a couple of weeks, she will look to see a repeated good effort and build-up play in their return to WSL matchdays.
It can be difficult to keep good form after a prolonged absence. Routine and staying in a rhythm are often essential when playing well. For all of the challenges Arroyo has faced since taking over, how she recaptures the inspired showings after extended time off for the Aston Villa Women will be one of her most difficult tasks.
