Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has praised Southampton's resilience after their recent faceoff. Despite being bottom of the table, Howe considers the Saints to have put up a determined game at St. Mary's.

Newcastle has defeated Southampton 3-1 at St. Mary's. Once again this is a result every Saints fan feared for, but at the same time wouldn't be surprised of.

Like their habitual routine, Ivan Juric's side scored the opening goal of the clash, only to let it slip later. As Paul Merson had predicted, Isak was the lead character in Newcastle's comeback. Scoring a brace, he put Newcastle in the lead soon.

Further, Sandro Tonali extended their lead to 3-1 in the second half. While the Saints did try their best to engineer a turnaround, the game had been done and dusted by then.

These are the types of games where one feels that results do not always complement efforts put in.

In the 84th minute, Mateus Fernandes had a goal ruled out, which could have sparked a comeback. Had it gone in the Saints' favor, who knows, a crucial point was possible at home.

But sadly, things haven't gone that way. And for now, all that the Saints are left with is a token of appreciation from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

After the fixture, Howe seemed quite impressed with Southampton's resilience on the weekend. As per the Daily Echo, Howe said: "Southampton's league position does tell a lie. I think they're much more competitive than their league position says."

While manager Eddie Howe's praise should boost Southampton's morale, it shouldn't make them content at all. Having lost six games in a row, it's high time Ivan Juric's side overcomes the barrier of appreciation to get crucial points.

For now, Southampton's situation looks quite clear. Surely, the last few games have falsified the critical assessments of them, they still have a long way to go before they can expect positive results against the top Premier League clubs.
