Newcastle United are considering appealing the red card Anthony Gordon received during their FA Cup loss to Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday, according to Sky Sports.
Gordon was given his marching orders after shoving Brighton defender Jan Paul Van Hecke to the ground out of frustration in the 83rd minute.
The red card means he will miss games against West Ham United and Brentford in the league. More importantly, he will not be available for the League Cup final versus Liverpool.
Newcastle will be desperate to have the England international in the mix when they head to Wembley Stadium.
He is a crucial member of Eddie Howe’s side, and they need his services. His partnership in attack with Alexander Isak is key for them.
Gordon has bagged six goals and five assists in 26 Premier League outings. The 24-year-old has recorded another two goals and an assist in six League Cup games.
However, overturning the red card seems highly unlikely. The incident was clear-cut violent conduct, and the dismissal was entirely justified.
Gordon left the referee with little choice after an unnecessary and reckless reaction.
Violent conduct, which includes forceful and aggressive behaviour outside of normal play, warrants a red card.
There is little ambiguity in the decision, and Newcastle will struggle to present a compelling argument for rescission.
Overturning the red card would set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that frustration justifies violent conduct. The appeal will likely be a futile exercise.
Gordon let his emotions get the better of him, and he and Newcastle must deal with the consequences.
