Fabian Schar’s late back post strike cost The Reds two points in an incredibly dramatic six-goal thriller at St James’ Park as the full-time result finished Newcastle United 3 Liverpool 3.
The hosts were nothing short of impressive in the first half of the match, Alexander Isak caused absolute havoc in the Liverpool area, especially for Joe Gomez. The Swedish international created a chance to put Newcastle ahead after overlapping Gomez and attempting to find a Newcastle shirt in the area but only for the ball to be cleared away by Liverpool skipper Virgil Van Dijk.
A few minutes later at the other end, Alexis MacAllister had a shot which clipped the outside of the post, a huge chance to put The Reds in front but fortune was not in the Argentine’s favour. Isak once again almost had a say in putting the hosts in front after picking out a wonderful pass to Jacob Murphy whose effort also clipped the outside of the post with Andy Robertson nowhere near his runner. Bruno Guimaraes received the ball from Isak just outside the area and got his shot away aiming for the bottom corner but Caoimhin Kelleher met the ball just in time.

Jarrel Quansah carried the ball from the full-back area of the pitch to the centre of Newcastle’s final third and seemed to play Mo Salah through on goal but the Egyptian’s touch was proved too heavy and Nick Pope safely collected the ball. Isak proved to be an absolute nuisance for Arne Slot’s side after developing yet another chance for The Magpies as he played a ball through to Lewis Hall down the left-hand side but Kelleher came out to scoop up the ball.
Eventually, Newcastle took the lead from who else but Alexander Isak, Guimaraes played an excellent through ball to Isak which was then smashed home by the towering forward, some might say Van Dijk failed to read the defensive line as he played Isak onside.
Liverpool should have counted themselves very lucky to be only 1-0 down heading into the tunnel as Gomez failed to clear the ball from his own final third which boyhood Liverpool fan Anthony Gordon capitalised on and went one-on-one with Kelleher but failed to double Newcastle’s lead after Ireland’s number one saved Gordon’s shot. Another Gomez error allowed Murphy to get a shot away but luckily the ball went wide of the Liverpool goal.
The first half ended 1-0 to Newcastle and the only player who could go down the tunnel with any credibility was Kelleher as he kept Liverpool’s goal deficit to a minimum.
Just five minutes into the second half, Curtis Jones equalised after a fantastic build-up of play with a first-touch effort and, a wonderful assist from Salah. Cody Gakpo almost put The Reds 2-1 up after the ball bounced back to him from an attempted cross but his shot flew way over the bar. Another chance happened again for Liverpool as Salah whipped in a ball to Quansah at the back post who nodded it towards Nunez but Darwin Nunez failed to connect with the ball.
Gordon drove forward through the middle and got a shot away but the shot was blocked by the head of Gomez. Gordon put Newcastle back in front after cutting inside skipping away from Gomez, just as Liverpool seemed to gain momentum. Jones almost instantly equalised with a header up at the other end of the pitch but the attempt was straight towards Pope who swept the ball away from danger. Isak found the net and it seemed as though Newcastle inserted a two-goal cushion into the game but the linesman’s flag went up. Lucky escape for Liverpool.

After brilliant link-up play from Salah and Trent Alexander Arnold, Liverpool equalised and made the game 2-2, an impact substitution from Arne Slot to say the least as Alexander Arnold replaced Gomez who has most certainly seen better days during his time at the club. The ball came in from Alexander Arnold and Salah found the net at Pope’s far post. Murphy almost put Newcastle ahead after Gordon found him with a brilliant pass, Kelleher came way out but Murphy’s shot was wide.
A penalty appeal came from the Newcastle players, dugout and fans for an alleged foul on Isak from Quansah but nothing was given by Andy Madley. Luis Diaz’s rebounded shot fell to Nunez single figure yards out from the box but Liverpool’s number nine drilled it far wide, unbelievable miss. Salah managed to cut in on his right foot but smashed the crossbar with his shot, the effort was very close to putting Liverpool ahead. After piling on more pressure to the host’s back line, Salah finally put Liverpool ahead after receiving a pass from Alexander Arnold, takes two touches, the first one with his back to the goal and he swivelled his body around to strike the ball past Pope.
Just as Liverpool seemed to be hanging on to a 3-2 lead and about to win their eighth consecutive win in all competitions, Guimaraes sent in a floated cross after a set piece situation which found Fabian Schar at the back post who managed to snatch two points on the board for Newcastle, devastating The Reds. A great game for the neutrals.
