Newcastle United are preparing for their crucial Premier League showdown against Ipswich Town with Eddie Howe set to return to the touchline. But while the manager’s recovery from pneumonia offers a timely boost, the Magpies are still managing a handful of key injury concerns that could affect Saturday’s team selection.
The Swiss defender is a major doubt for the weekend. Schär was substituted during the defeat to Aston Villa after feeling his hamstring. Although it was precautionary, his availability remains uncertain. Jason Tindall provided an update last week, saying (via ChronicleLive):
"Fabby was feeling his hamstring in the game so I felt it was the wise move to bring him off and to try and protect him, to make sure that hopefully he's OK for the remaining games."
If Schar does not make it, Emil Krafth is expected to fill in.
There is positive Newcastle news regarding Botman. The Dutchman, who has been sidelined following minor knee surgery, is ahead of schedule in his recovery. Tindall confirmed (via ChronicleLive):
"He’s on the grass now. He’s joining in some parts of training. So maybe next weekend [Ipswich], possibly, he could be involved or could be there for selection. But again, that will be assessed over the coming days."
However, with his fitness still being managed, he is unlikely to replace Schär if the latter is ruled out.
The England full-back’s season is already over. Hall suffered a foot injury in February and will not be back until pre-season. His absence continues to limit Eddie Howe’s defensive options, particularly on the left.
There is no return date for the club captain. Lascelles’ recovery from an ACL injury suffered last year has been slow, and he will not be involved this weekend.
