If there is anything to take from the recent poor run of results from Manchester City it is that it’s become apparent that a rebuild is coming to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Over the past eleven games it has appeared that this City squad is at the end of their run. They have dominated English and European football over the past seven seasons. But this season has appeared to be a step too far for several of City’s warriors.
While it has been sad to see the decline of several of Manchester City’s players as age, injury and fatigue have caught up to them, there could be an exciting time looming on the horizon. As one era ends another could be set to begin. It is becoming clear that Manchester City will look to rebuild their squad in the near future. That could begin next month during the January transfer window. But next summer looms as a pivotal moment in City’s rebuild. While players coming in will be exciting it will also likely see a host of key players call time on their Manchester City careers.
In an interview shared by the Daily Record Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes Manchester City could sell a host of players next summer. Balague had this to say about the Manchester City squad: “They are generally achieving their targets, and something that gets the renewed target of this season is the top four. That is what City want to do. That is the target they have all put I their head. I think they will achieve that. They are not that far away at the moment. You are talking about an achievable target. They want to recover the essence of the team, the look of the team. But quite clearly Pep Guardiola is going to use the last two years of his contract – which are probably be the last two of his career as a club manager – to prepare a new Manchester City. I have got a very clear idea that they will want to get rid of five or six regular starters for Manchester City and bring five or six new starters. Half of the team. It is a new era. The end of this one and a new era starting.”
While the topic of who Manchester City could target to rebuild their squad dominates the topic of discussions to rebuild their squad a host of players will likely have to make way next summer. That is the just facts of the situation City are facing. But who that could be remains to be seen just yet.
There are question marks surrounding the future of Kevin De Bruyne. He is in the final season of his current contract. Whether or not he stays at Manchester City remains to be seen. Players such as Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and perhaps even Ederson may all decide that their job at City is done next summer. That remains to be seen but it is a distinct possibility.
A rebuild is coming to Manchester City’s squad. That is obvious to see. It may see a host of club legends depart. That will be sad to see but it needs to be done so that Manchester City can build towards their next era of dominance. Who departs the club will be just as a big a story as who arrives in January and next summer.
