Anthony Elanga scored possibly the best goal in the Premier League this season to beat Manchester United and take Nottingham Forest one step closer to Champions League football.

The winger ran 85 metres in just nine seconds before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Andre Onana in the fifth minute of the game to secure a huge 1-0 victory over his former club.

The result puts Forest in a great position to finish in the top four and qualify for Europe’s top competition next season. The gap between them in third and fourth-placed Chelsea has widened to eight points with eight games remaining, albeit having played a game more than the chasing pack.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Elanga explained how he remained composed in front of goal after making such a lung-busting run.

“It’s about attacking the space and getting to the edge of the box as quick as I can, that’s where you can hurt the opposition,” the Sweden international said.

“I saw the space and I back that I can show it on the pitch. It’s not too shabby!

“The finish was something I’ve worked on. You can run fast but you need to remain calm.”

Elanga swapped Old Trafford for the City Ground for a reported £15 million transfer fee in 2023.

“Coming here was about playing, I’m not the finished product,” he added. “I learnt a lot at Man United. I appreciate them a lot. I am enjoying my football and want to keep going.”

Forest captain Ryan Yates lavished praise on Elanga for his ability to receive possession when the team are under pressure.

“He is a dream for a midfielder,” said Yates. “Especially us sitting in that low-block – you can give him the ball and he does the rest.”
