Ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, head coach Nuri Şahin sat down to discuss several topics during the pre-match press conference, one of which included summer signing Yan Couto. Couto has struggled quite a bit with injuries this season, hampering his ability to feature at right back for Dortmund. His addition to this Dortmund side brought much excitement, especially considering how important it was for Dortmund to add a fullback last summer.

After a very impressive campaign last season out on loan from Manchester City with Girona in La Liga, the expectations have been extremely high for Couto, whose deal is set to be made permanent next summer. Şahin has recognized that Couto’s start hasn’t been easy, but reiterated that he is sure the Brazilian international will bounce back and become an important player forDie Schwarzgelben:

"Yan had a difficult start. He came to a new country, with a new language, a new culture. We haven't seen the Yan we want yet. But Yan is one of the guys whose full potential we will still exploit."- Nuri Şahin

Couto is a fullback in the mold of former Dortmund left back Raphaël Guerreiro, meaning that his skills on the pitch are very attack-minded. Like his Portuguese predecessor, his creativity (2 goals and 10 assists in Spain last season) from a more defensive role made many expect him to be one of the main creative outlets for Şahin’s side this season.

While we haven’t seen too much of him yet, there have already been glimpses of his ability to get excited about. His creative nature, once he really gets going, will surely become indispensable in the months to come as he sees more minutes on the pitch, and attackers like Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier will have one more reliable, chance creating outlet for them to feed off of.
