AS Saint-Etienne have announced the signing of head coach Eirik Horneland. Les Verts have moved swiftly to replace Olivier Dall’Oglio, whose tenure ended last Saturday after a streak of bad results had led Saint-Etienne to 16th in Ligue 1. The 49-year-old Horneland was the frontrunner to land the Saint-Etienne job. He even resigned from SK Brann on Tuesday to jump at the opportunity to coach in Ligue 1.
Horneland led SK Brann to the Norwegian First Division title in 2022 and was crowned Norwegian First Division Coach of the Year the same year. Despite his relative inexperience abroad and Saint-Etienne’s precarious position, Horneland has signed a long-term contract with the Rodez club, until 2027 with an option to trigger a further year. Horneland will be accompanied by a new deputy head coach, Hassan El Fakiri.
“It is a real honor to join a great club like AS Saint-Étienne, not only for its history and record, but above all for the role it plays in all a city and the fervor it generates”, Horneland said. Saint-Etienne president Ivan Gazidis added that Eirik is “a very talented coach, recognized and appreciated, who will bring us a lot to build a culture of performance and an assertive style of play.”
