FC Nantes have announced the departure of defender Fabio (32), who has left Les Canaris to return to his native Brazil and join recently-promoted Grêmio.
Fabio joined the Ligue 1 side from Middlesborough in 2018, and his contract was set to expire at the end of the current season. With that in mind, the club decided to cash in on the player now, rather than losing him on a free during the summer. The amount that Nantes will receive for the transfer has not been revealed.
The former Manchester United right-back, who is also adept at playing left-back, played more than 90 games for the Ligue 1 side. He was a part of the team that won the Coupe de France last year. Following that success, the Brazilian renewed his contract for a further year, but this season has been blighted by frequent injuries. As a result, he has only started three Ligue 1 games this term.
Fabio has signed for Grêmio on a contract that runs until 2024. He is joined at the Brazilian club by Luis Suarez.
