Burnley have confirmed the arrival of Lorenz Assignon (23). The Frenchman arrives from Stade Rennais on loan until the end of the season.
Assignon was the apparent heir to Hamari Traoré’s right-back berth at Rennes, after the former captain left in the summer, however, in recent weeks, he has fallen down the pecking order. At the age of 23, the Frenchman is not happy with simply being a backup option, and as a result, he has been looking to depart Roazhon Park before the closure of the window.
However, Rennes’ initial €10m asking price proved prohibitive, and was enough to deter interest from Bournemouth. Olympique de Marseille were also interested in Assignon, however, the DNCG did not give the green light to the deal. Galatasaray, who were in the market for a replacement for Bayern Munich’s Sacha Boey, also pulled out of the race.
Burnley then showed interest as the transfer deadline approached and were swift in concluding a deal for the Frenchman. The Premier League club have confirmed that Assignon has joined on loan until the end of the season, whilst Fabrizio Romano reports that the Clarets have included a buy option in the deal.
