Ole Romeny was Indonesia’s hero on Tuesday as his goal against Bahrain gave the country three important points in the Asian World Cup qualifying series. After the match, Romeny explained that this decisive 1-0 strike held both personal and patriotic importance.
“I told my mother that every goal I score in the Indonesian shirt will be for my grandmother. She is the reason I am here. I know she will be very proud of me. And this goal is also for the whole of Indonesia.
“The way the people cheer us on, they smile at us, sometimes they even cry. Yes, this is also for the whole country.”
Romeny then explains why he celebrated his goal by pushing his head up, with his right hand under his chin in a style similar to that of Virgil van Dijk.
“I meant that as a positive message for children, and actually everyone, who is having a hard time,’ said the 24-year-old Oxford United striker. “Whether that’s in football or in life. Keep working hard and believing in yourself. Always keep your head up.”
