As two talented teams prepare to battle it out, we’ve picked our PSG and Liverpool Combined XI.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Liverpool – Combined XI

Goalkeeper: Alisson – Liverpool

Alisson earns the gloves with the Brazilian right among the best goalkeepers in the game. Gianluigi Donnarumma can be an immense presence in his own right but has not convinced all during his time in Paris, amid some high-profile mistakes. Errors from Alisson are a rarity for the Reds.

Right-back: Achraf Hakimi – PSG

Tonight’s clash will feature two right-backs capable of doing things most mortals cannot. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ability on the ball is unquestionable, though Hakimi offers a more balanced option. A marauding tour-de-force from full-back, the Moroccan leads the Champions League for assists this season.

Centre-back: Ibrahima Konate – Liverpool

One half of perhaps the best centre-back pairing in Europe right now. Ibrahima Konate has won over Arne Slot after starting the season out of the side, with his recovery pace and aerial presence crucial for the Reds. He ranks second in the Premier League for percentage of aerial duels won (76.9%) and is rumoured to be on PSG’s transfer wish list.

Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool

The Dutch defender has been imperious this season, performing at the same elite level we’ve become accustomed to. Van Dijk has been one of the greatest defenders of his era and is a shoo-in for this side. It’s time Liverpool sorted out that new deal.

Left-back: Nuno Mendes – PSG

Nuno Mendes benefits from Andy Robertson’s decline this season to take the left-back spot. Still just 22, the Portugal international has been a regular in the PSG side for three seasons, offering endless energy down the left.

Midfield: Ryan Gravenberch – Liverpool

One of Europe’s most improved players this season. After an underwhelming first season at Liverpool, Ryan Gravenberch has begun to fulfil the potential first excitedly discussed at Ajax. He’s been a revelation for the Reds at number six, combining duel-winning with elegance on the ball.

Midfield: Alexis Mac Allister – Liverpool

Alexis Mac Allister hasn’t shared much of the spotlight at Liverpool this season but he’s been quietly excellent as the fulcrum of Arne Slot’s midfield. The World Cup winner picks passes between lines and brings tenacity off the ball. His battle with Joao Neves could be critical in Paris tonight.

Midfield: Dominik Szoboszlai – Liverpool

Fast becoming a fans’ favourite at Liverpool. Dominik Szoboszlai’s importance has grown in recent weeks with the Hungarian becoming the engine of Arne Slot’s midfield. Relentless running has been rewarded with goals of late, as Szoboszlai has got tangible rewards for his endeavour.

Right-wing: Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

The favourite for the Ballon d’Or with good reason. Salah is having a golden season, which given the standards he has set previously is some statement. He leads the Premier League for goals, is on course to break the division’s assist record, and has inspired Liverpool to a 13-point lead in the title race.

Left-wing: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – PSG

Paris Saint-Germain might have moved on from their superstar era, but the Parisians are still unafraid to splash the cash. €70m was dropped on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January, a fabulous footballer who was the inspiration behind Napoli’s drought-breaking title success in 2022/23. The Georgian has been eased into action but his combinations with Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele are hugely exciting.

Forward: Ousmane Dembele – PSG

Dembele is rivalling Salah as Europe’s most in-form player right now. The Frenchman has fired 26 goals in all competitions for PSG, just one fewer than he managed in the previous four campaigns combined. Injuries had hindered his potential, but Dembele is flourishing right now. Fingers crossed he can keep on this trajectory.
