On Friday afternoon, Ekstraklasa side Cracovia announced the signing of Ukraine international Yevhen Konoplyanka on a free transfer.

32-year-old Konoplyanka arrived in Kraków to sign a six-month contract with Jacek Zieliński’s side, with the option to extend for a further year. He was paraded in front of the Pasy faithful prior to Friday night’s 2-0 victory over Lechia Gdańsk.

The left-sided winger had made only a handful of substitute appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk this season, before being released by the Ukrainian club during the winter break. His last start for the club was as far back as March.

Cracovia – currently ninth in the Polish Ekstraklasa – becomes the fifth club in Konoplyanka’s career. The midfielder has previously spent time with Sevilla, Schalke 04, and his first club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, and won the UEFA Europa League with the former in 2015/16. Since 2010, he has also made 86 appearances for the national team, scoring 21 goals.

Konoplyanka reportedly turned down interest from Legia Warsaw, and told the club’s YouTube channel that “the talks took place in a family atmosphere. That’s why I decided to come here – it feels great when you feel needed.”
