Pep Guardiola has admitted that his performance has been “really poor” as Man City manager this season.
City have endured one of their worst campaigns in the last decade and remain locked in a battle to secure Champions League football for next season.
However, City’s boss still thinks that he and his side could have been better, even with their well documented injury struggles.
Guardiola was asked how he would describe the performance of himself and his coaches this season. The Catalan responded simply: “This season? Really poor.
“The opponents never gave us a red carpet to win the titles that we won. My duty was to overcome the situation much better than I have done.”
Further questioned about the causes of the sub-par performance, he claimed to know: “A few details, the reason why it has happened. Hopefully it does not happen next season, this is important.”
The former Barcelona manager also assured fans that he remains enthusiastic in his job and that he wants to guide the club back to the top next season.
Despite their troubles, City still have an opportunity to win silverware this season. For almost every other manager and team, winning a trophy would be more than enough to make a season a memorable success.
However winning just a cup is not enough for Pep Guardiola with his illustrious managerial record. He feels that this season will be remembered as a failure, regardless of a potential FA Cup triumph.
The coach admitted: “I have said many times recently, of course it would be nice to arrive at the final of the FA cup and to win it. And to qualify for the Champions League.
“But the season has been poor. It is not going to change.”
Guardiola expanded: ”Our standards and many things were not good. This is the reality. It is not going to change for the fact that we won one title.”
City’s manager has only ever finished one season without silverware. He continued: “We will be happy, of course, we want to do it (win the FA Cup).
“But how we behaved all of us this season is not going to change if we qualify for the Champions League. Again, I said it’s a huge success, if we win in the FA Cup it is a huge success, but the season has not been good.”
The Catalan denies that there is a lack of motivation among his players that have won so much in the past. He declare: “I’m not saying that they don’t want it, that they didn’t want it. What I’m saying is that we were not able.”
