Kevin De Bruyne has long been a Premier League icon—one of Manchester City’s greatest ever players and a modern-day midfield general. But as he edges closer to a summer departure, the 33-year-old Belgian has sparked fresh speculation by refusing to rule out remaining in English football beyond his spell at the Etihad.
His candid admission during a recent interview has opened the door to a potential Premier League transfer—an outcome few had foreseen given growing interest from Major League Soccer. But make no mistake: De Bruyne’s next move could redefine the twilight of his illustrious career.
For months, it seemed inevitable that De Bruyne would take his talents overseas. With his contract at Manchester City winding down and a move to the United States reportedly on the cards, it looked like the midfielder would follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.
However, his recent comments have flipped the narrative.
“I’m open for anything, anything, just because I have to look at the whole picture,” De Bruyne said, before clarifying that any potential transfer must suit his family’s needs.
It’s a pragmatic stance from a player entering the final chapter of his professional career. But it also hints at unfinished business. If his display against Crystal Palace shortly after his potential exit was confirmed is any indication, there’s still fuel left in the tank—and a point to prove.
Not every club can afford De Bruyne—even if he accepts a considerable pay cut from his reported £400,000-a-week wage. Championship sides are out of the equation. Newcastle, once a potential fit, now seem unlikely due to their existing high-earning midfield duo and shift away from big-name signings.
So who’s left?
West Ham might express interest—they often do when top names become available—but whether they can pull off such a move remains doubtful. The most realistic option? A side looking for short-term star power and willing to accommodate a marquee signing to appease fans after another underwhelming campaign.
It’s a bold call to say Spurs are a possible destination. But when you factor in the club’s appetite for high-profile names, their ambitious (if occasionally chaotic) project under Ange Postecoglou, and the need to energise a frustrated fan base, it starts to make sense. Spurs have a history of attracting ageing stars with something to prove. De Bruyne fits the bill—if the finances align.
Whether De Bruyne opts for a transatlantic adventure or remains in the Premier League, one thing is certain: his next chapter will be watched closely. With over 100 assists and countless game-changing performances, his legacy is secure. But football rarely deals in nostalgia. For De Bruyne, the desire to keep competing at the highest level could outweigh the appeal of an MLS wind-down.
His next move may be unconventional. It might even be controversial. But for a player who has constantly defied expectations, it could be the perfect swansong.
