My Conclusions
Saturday 5 April
Everton v Arsenal – With a defeat, then two draws and scraping two wins by single goal winning margins, Arsenal not looking very convincing. Before the 1-0 defeat at Liverpool in midweek, Everton hadn’t lost any of their last nine PL matches. The last four of those had been draws but I think a very good chance Arteta won’t get three points. Very unlikely Newcastle could catch the Gunners but if Everton and NUFC both win this weekend, Newcastle would be eight points behind Arsenal and have a game in hand. Plus, after beating Arsenal three times already, Eddie Howe faces Mikel Arteta once again at the Emirates before the season ends.
Palace v Brighton – Losing 3-0 at home to Villa has put a big dent in any Brighton hopes of top five. In their bizarre ‘derby’, I would be surprised if they get a win on Saturday. Palace have picked up 10 points in their last four PL matches and only two defeats in their last twelve, I can’t see Palace losing here and hopefully a defeat for Brighton.
Ipswich v Wolves –A match that doesn’t impact Newcastle United, apart from potentially looking at the match at SJP later this month against Ipswich. When maybe we’d like to see Ipswich already having been relegated. It should be a good game today, as if Ipswich win they close the gap to fourth bottom Wolves and give themselves some hope, failing to win will surely mean all hope gone for Sir Bobby’s former club.
West Ham v Bournemouth – Bournemouth’s Champions League hopes have fallen off a cliff. Only one point from their last five games as they look to have run out of steam. West Ham have been poor this season but are at home and can step up to a decent level once in a while. A draw looks most likely.
Villa v Forest – Speaking of draws, I guess that for Newcastle fans, neither side winning this game would be ideal. Villa won 3-0 at Brighton in midweek but only three wins in their last nine. Forest fortunate against a Man U side with so little goalscoring threat in midweek, as they won 1-0 at the City Ground. I think a draw and a point going astray would be ideal and is the most likely.
Sunday 6 April
Brentford v Chelsea – The last time Chelsea won a game against a team outside the current bottom seven, was back on 15 December 2024. That was home to Brentford. However, I think every reason to hope that the Bees can get at least a draw. We saw how good they are on Wednesday night at SJP and before losing to Newcastle, Brentford had won three and only lost one of their last five PL matches.
Fulham v Liverpool – Fulham are another team to fade away from Champions League contention, losing three of their last five PL matches. Liverpool not in great form seemingly as they edge towards the title, I think this could end in a draw.
Spurs v Southampton – Two really poor teams and anything could happen here. You think Spurs should win this but I wouldn’t put a penny on them doing so.
Man U v Man City – Man City have only beaten Spurs and Leicester in their last five PL matches, losing two and drawing against Brighton. Without Haaland, I think every chance Man U can do Newcastle a favour. Even when Man City have had a far better side, at times Man U still troubling them. I can see Pep dropping a couple of points here against a limited Man U who will raise their game for this derby.
