Ruud van Nistelrooy is hoping to use his Manchester United links to enforce the help of a couple of their players for Leicester City’s survival quest.

Following yesterday’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, the Foxes sit 18th-placed after matchweek 19 and are now two points from safety ahead of travelling to Villa Park on Saturday.

Van Nistelrooy was sought to succeed Steve Cooper at the end of November after his brief interim spell with United; he started the season as an assistant coach to Erik ten Hag but took the reins on a temporary basis while the board finalised their deal with Ruben Amorim. When he was officially appointed, the Dutchman departed Old Trafford for pastures new, having won three matches and drawn once in his four-game tenure.

Nonetheless, all his focus is now on retaining Leicester’s Premier League status for another season, and in order to do so, reinforcements may be necessary in January to give them the upper hand over their fellow strugglers of the division.

Mail Sport claims the Midlands outfit have approached United in hopes of sanctioning some loan deals for the second half of the term. One name believed to be on their shortlist is 20-year-old Toby Collyer, who has featured for only 45 minutes in the league this season – but did play the full 90 minutes of the Reds’ third-round Carabao Cup win over Barnsley in September.

Another – albeit less likely – option is Victor Lindelof. TBR Football revealed earlier in December that the Swede had emerged as a target for Leicester and, given that he ranks lower in the pecking order than he’d hope at this stage of his career, a move elsewhere would perhaps suit him.

However, with Lindelof now entering the final six months of his contract in M16, United would much rather sanction his sale rather than a loan, after which he would leave for nothing in the summer of 2025.
