Premier League Team of the Season so far for 2024/25

Goalkeeper: Matz Sels – Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have had a mixed bag when it comes to goalkeepers since promotion but Matz Sels appears to have nailed down the number one role. The big Belgian has made some terrific stops for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who boast the second-best defensive record in the Premier League this season.

Right-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool

The will-he won’t-he saga will rumble on with the January transfer window only set to intensify speculation. Alexander-Arnold has again shown just why Real Madrid are so keen to take him to Spain, providing four assists for a Liverpool side clear at the top. If he’s not assisting goals himself, he’s dissecting defences for others to play the final pass. Criticism of his defensive game has been tough to shake but he ranks third in the Premier League for dribblers tackled (29) this season.

Centre-back: Nikola Milenkovic – Nottingham Forest

Nikola Milenkovic might just be the signing of the season so far, with his £12m arrival from Fiorentina brilliant business for Forest. The Serbian centre-back has helped transform the Tricky Trees defensively, with his aerial presence in both boxes crucial. Milenkovic’s brand of no-nonsense defending has helped bring the best out of Murillo alongside him.

Centre-back: Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has marshalled the league’s best defence so far this season with the 33-year-old still, perhaps, the best in the business. No player in the Premier League has had more touches, while Van Dijk is among the league leaders for aerial duels won, percentage of aerial duels won, progressive passing distance, and interceptions. Liverpool need the Dutch defender to remain fit over the second half of the season. He’s irreplaceable.

Left-back: Antonee Robinson – Fulham

Antonee Robinson’s turbocharged performances have seen Fulham boss Marco Silva salute the American as the Premier League’s best left-back. Robinson has a strong case for that title, having improved his end product to match the industry and athleticism that has long made him a difficult opponent to bypass. His seven assists are a league-leading total among defenders, while he tops the Premier League for crosses into the penalty box and interceptions.

Midfield: Moises Caicedo – Chelsea

After a tough first season at Chelsea, Moises Caicedo has begun to show why the Blues were prepared to break the bank to sign him from Brighton. The Ecuadorian is all-action and has evolved into one of the most well-rounded midfielders in the league. Caicedo has made more tackles (60) than any other midfielder in the Premier League this season.

Midfield: Ryan Gravenberch – Liverpool

A revelation this season. Ryan Gravenberch has taken his chance under Arne Slot, emerging as the classy number six the Reds thought they’d missed out on in the summer. The Dutchman’s duel-winning and press resistance has transformed the Liverpool midfield, as the Merseysiders enter 2025 leading in the Premier League and Champions League. He ranks second in the division for interceptions (36).

Midfield: Cole Palmer – Chelsea

Cole Palmer had a calendar year to remember as the midfielder announced his arrival as a Premier League star. Palmer ended the year with 39 goals and assists, the most in the Premier League alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. This season, he has continued to sprinkle stardust on a youthful Chelsea team improving under new head coach Enzo Maresca. His four-goal haul against Brighton in September was a remarkable individual display.

Right-wing: Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Mohamed Salah, unquestionably, has been the standout player of the campaign. He leads the league for goals and assists, having produced more goal involvements (30) than any player in Premier League history at this stage of the season.

Such has been his output, Salah has emerged as a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. If the season can end in big trophies, the Egyptian could become just the second African to be named football’s finest.

Left-wing: Matheus Cunha – Wolves

You’ve got to be doing something right to earn inclusion in our Team of the Season when representing a team in 17th place. Matheus Cunha has almost singlehandedly dragged Wolves out of the bottom three. With 10 goals and four assists in just 18 league starts, the Brazilian has carried a struggling side on his back at times. Wolves face a fight to hold onto the 25-year-old as bigger clubs circle.

Forward: Alexander Isak – Newcastle

A purple patch of form has seen Alexander Isak overhaul Chris Wood and Erling Haaland to claim our centre-forward role.

The Swedish striker has been involved in 16 goals and assists in 17 games for Newcastle, firing the Magpies back into European contention after a mixed start. Isak has averaged a goal every 115 minutes in the league for Newcastle to underline his status as one of Europe’s best goal-getters.
