Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City face off this Saturday at the Hillsborough Stadium for matchweek 40 of the EFL Championship.
The Owls have 52 points so far this season and currently occupy 12th position in the table. In their last outing, Danny Röhl's team drew 1-1 against Cardiff City.
Meanwhile, Hull City have 41 points to their name this season and occupy 21st position in the table. In their last encounter, Tim Walter's team were beaten 0-1 by Luton Town.
The last meeting between the two teams ended with Sheffield Wed. winning 2-0.
James Mappin (WTID Podcast): A rare Saturday 3pm kick off for us this weekend. Off the pitch matters have dominated proceedings this week with the news that the players haven’t been paid for the month of March. The match against Hull City may come as a welcome distraction for the fans at least. The first half performance against Cardiff last weekend wasn’t good enough but in light of the situation, it wasn’t surprising.
Hopefully the players can put this behind them and focus on the job that is in hand. Danny has said that other than injuries to Di'Shon Bernard and Max Lowe we have a clean bill of health which means that Ibrahim Cissoko, Stuart Armstrong, Akin Famewo and Yan Valery are back from their injuries and ready for selection.
Hull City are in ‘fairly’ decent form but are hovering just over the drop zone at the moment - much like Cardiff City last week. We failed to dispatch Cardiff and if we’re going to have any sort of chance of getting into the play offs, as slim as a chance it is, we need to pick up a win on Saturday, and with it only the second win at home in 2025.
Predicted score: 2-1
Joe Collins (Old Grandpa Joe): João Pedro returns from suspension for Hull City, which is a huge boost to Rubén Sellés. Although we coped without our top scorer during his ban, the defeat to Luton showed just how much he adds to the side when he’s in it. His footballing brain is second-to-none, his physical presence makes him a handful for defenders, technically he is great and he works hard off the ball.
Losing to Luton and Derby’s win in midweek has sucked us right back into the scrap at the bottom of the table, so points are a must as we travel to Hillsborough. With Wednesday’s poor home form, our good away record and our tendency to pick up points against teams higher up the table as opposed to teams around us gives me some cautious confidence for Saturday afternoon.
