Leeds United have lost Georginio Rutter but could find themselves with an ideal replacement

Leeds United have endured a trying summer after seeing a host of Daniel Farke's prized assets lured away from Elland Road as a consequence of May's Championship play-off final defeat to Southampton.

Georginio Rutter recently emerged as the latest high-profile departure following his Brighton and Hove Albion switch - but the Whites may be on course to finding a successful replacement in Ilias Chair.

After the departures of Glen Kamara, Archie Gray and Crycensio Summerville, Leeds' promotion ambitions for the 2024/25 Championship campaign were handed yet another complication when the shock £40m release clause inserted into Rutter's contract was triggered by Brighton earlier this month.

Leeds supporters have been rather vocal pertaining to a perceived lack of urgency from the club in terms of sourcing replacements for their notable outgoings, but Leeds are believed to be pursuing QPR's creator-in-chief Chair and he may well represent their best opportunity for filling the void left by Rutter.

Georginio Rutter will be a big miss for Leeds United

The French forward occupied the number 10 role in Farke's side last term and often proved the glue in their attack, offering unique and unrivalled levels of creative quality to help Leeds to get within 90 minutes of returning to the Premier League at the very first time of asking.

Rutter's outlay of seven strikes was accompanied by an astonishing 15 assists, which came from creating 82 chances and providing a dynamic, yet artistic threat by completing no less than 127 dribbles in league action.

You would be hard-pressed to find many fans capable of genuinely attesting the merit of Rutter earning another chance in the top-flight, with his ability and delivery often operating in different classes compared to the rest of the Championship last season.

He was a joy to watch in West Yorkshire and routinely lit up Elland Road with such innate invention, dancing feet and undeniable swagger, so Leeds will desire a similar impact from whoever they decide to replace him with.

QPR's Ilias Chair would be a strong Georginio Rutter replacement for Leeds United

Successfully replacing an individual of Rutter's class presents an extremely tall order in any circumstance, but Leeds appear to be giving themselves a fighter's chance of doing exactly that by launching an interest in Chair.

The revelation comes from a recent report by Football Insider, who claim that Leeds are plotting a "last grasp move" to sign the Moroccan playmaker before the summer transfer window slams to a close in less than a week's time.

Chair has now entered his final season under contract at Loftus Road and that could work to Leeds' advantage when it comes to brokering a deal, especially given the significant budget at their disposal after receiving a host of sales across the summer.

The 26-year-old has given plenty of architecture and aesthetic to QPR's attacking play over the last few years, emerging among the finest and most creative attacking midfielders that the second-tier has to offer. Akin to Rutter himself, Chair is a maverick number 10 and exerts a similar degree of X-Factor upon matches, capable of dancing past opposing defenders with ease and breaking defensive lines with his sharp eye for a pass.

Chair has shone for QPR and has previously carried the side on his back, but you do have to wonder just how much more his talents would come to fruition under the tutelage of higher-quality coaches and, fundamentally, playing in a better side which dominates possession and the rhythm of matches.

Deceiving and diminutive, Chair is at his best when given attacking freedom and the license to pick up the ball in pockets of space before advancing with his progressive passing or willingness to take on opponents.

Leeds now find themselves in sore need of those two qualities vacated by Rutter and Chair seems an ideal replacement. The slight caveat is that he is injured until next month but the upcoming international break would soften the blow if Leeds decide to further their interest and conclusively end up landing their man.
