A leading member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has been playing through the pain barrier all season.

That’s according to Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, who points towards Antonio Rüdiger as the player in question.

Stopper Rüdiger, for his part, is fresh off going under the knife.

After limping through the closing exchanges of Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat at the hands of Barcelona last weekend, the German was confirmed to have suffered ‘a tear in the outer meniscus of his left knee’.

Rüdiger, in turn, was forced under the knife, ruled out for the remainder of the campaign as a result.

And as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, this procedure was a long time coming for the former Chelsea man…

As per the aforementioned Mario Cortegana:

‘Sources told The Athletic that he has been taking pain killers for eight months, including for training.’
