Real Madrid veteran delighted with national team return after long absence – ‘Something special’ | OneFootball

David Alaba is one of many Real Madrid players currently on international duty on account on the upcoming break.

Alaba’s national team participation is particularly significant as the Real Madrid defender is returning to the Austrian team fold after an extremely long gap.

Indeed, Alaba has played for the Austrian national team way back in November 2023, when he appeared in a friendly against Germany.

Alaba had picked up a knee injury shortly afterwards which also ruled him out of Euro 2024. During his period, Alaba was still with the national team but on a mentorship capacity.

However, having finally recovered from all injuries, Alaba is well and truly back as a player for the Austrian national team.

Alaba on returning to Austrian national team

In a recent interaction with the press, Alaba expressed his delight at the prospect of playing against for the Austrian national team.

“This is something special. I’m really happy. I haven’t been able to help the team on the pitch recently. The fact that I’m back on the pitch now, being able to help the team, really means a lot to me,” he said (h/t Laola).

“I feel very good, I’ve been able to make progress. I’m already very confident in myself, I’ve been able to get my minutes in the last few weeks and months. My development is clearly pointing upwards,” he added.

On whether he is ready to play 90 minutes in both their upcoming games, the 32-year-old stated:

“Two 90-minute sessions are realistic, but whether it makes sense is another matter.”

With 105 appearances for the national team, Alaba is one of Austria’s most decorated and experienced players.

His presence, therefore, could be integral as Austria take on Serbia in the UEFA Nations League. Real Madrid, though, will be hopeful that the veteran defender doesn’t pick up any fresh blow, especially at such a crucial juncture of the season.
