FC Barcelona cut down their deficit at the top of the La Liga table to four points last night as they got a hard-earned victory over Alaves. Robert Lewandowski was the sole goal-scorer in a match that ended 1-1 in the Catalans’ favor.

While things ultimately ended up well for the Blaugranes, this could have been a disastrous night for them, not only because of the possibility of dropped points but mostly because of an incident in which Gavi was involved.

The young midfielder clashed with the Alaves player Conechny, with both players sustaining hard blows to their heads. The impact of the blow was so serious that they both had to be substituted, and both of them were also taken to a hospital.

Luckily, this clash did not have serious long-term implications for the players. Gavi was able to leave the pitch on his feet, and was keen to get back on the pitch, but the doctors did not see him as fit to play and thus Flick replaced him with Fermin Lopez.

This was naturally a worrying moment for all the Barcelona fans at Montjuïc. However, Gavi’s family and friends, who were also in the stadium, were the most concerned.

In such circumstances, Mundo Deportivo has reported how another Blaugrana player, Dani Olmo, reassured them.

The midfielder made his way to the Barcelona bench to ask other players about Gavi’s situation and then conveyed the positive message to Gavi’s family and friends back in the crowd, who were relieved to hear about his condition.

Hopefully, Gavi will be able to return to the pitch in the upcoming match against Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarter-final on Thursday. But even if this is not the case, Flick will have enough resources in his squad to keep the midfielder rested for another game.
