We are now a couple of weeks into the January transfer window and Sheffield United have not signed anybody, despite a desperate plea from manager Chris Wilder for the new owners to strengthen squad depth.

The Blades continue to be linked with targets, and one of them is Hertha Berlin right-back Jonjoe Kenny, according to Alan Nixon. At 27 years of age, the former Everton man could be heading back to England after spending a couple of seasons in Germany, racking up 46 Bundesliga 2 games (17 of those came this season). Kenny’s contract expires at the end of the season which means the Blades could get him for a minimal fee this window.

Kenny would add a vastly experienced right-back to United’s ranks, with both Alfie Gilchrist and Femi Seriki lacking in that department. Supporters may be wondering what’s the point of having three right-backs in the squad, but, it’s worth noting that the Blades may be viewing Gilchrist as a centre-back option now if they are struggling to find a suitable central defender to sign.

This season, Kenny has shown his quality on the ball as well as his defensive awareness. The Englishman has produced five assists and chipped in with a goal in 17 Bundesliga 2 appearances. Kenny ranks in the 96th percentile for pass completion compared to other full-backs and wing-backs in the league, and he ranks in the 98th percentile for goal-creating actions, per FBref.

Defensively, he has helped Hertha keep three clean sheets in the league. He currently ranks in the top 5% in the league for interceptions which highlights his defensive awareness.

Sheffield United Want Forward Addition

Meanwhile, after recent reports stating that Ben Brereton Diaz is being pursued by Sheffield United, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, the Mail are now claiming the player only wants to move to United should he leave Southampton this month. The article claims that the Chilean’s wife is expecting a baby so he doesn’t want to unsettle anything at this stage.

Brereton Diaz was once again left out of the matchday squad last weekend as Southampton hosted Swansea City in the FA Cup, this added more fuel to the fire regarding the recent transfer rumours involving the versatile forward.

Lastly, Nixon has also stated that both the Blades and Sunderland are willing to agree to a loan-to-buy deal for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, who is currently on loan at Stoke City. Cannon has scored nine goals in 22 appearances during his loan spell.
