Struggling Serie A giants Roma will have cause to celebrate long into the night in the Eternal City after Claudio Ranieri's men earned a crucial 2-0 Derby della Capitale win over bitter rivals Lazio.

With Lazio pushing for a top-four finish and subsequent Champions League football in 2025-26, Roma's contrasting season, which saw them come into tonight's clash sitting in the bottom half of the table, served as motivation enough in the Italian capital.

It was Roma who would send their supporters home happy from Stadio Olimpico despite often being second-best across 90 minutes of action, with hometown hero Lorenzo Pellegrini breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute.

Early surges forward by Lazio before and after the opener could not spare Biancocelesti from going 2-0 down less than ten minutes later when Belgian international Alexis Saelemaekers doubled the deficit with a close-range finish.

The former Anderlecht academy starlet converted despite his initial effort being saved after Roma did well to break from the halfway line after strong hold-up play by Artem Dovbyk set them away.

Despite the two-nil deficit, Lazio still appeared to be good value to at least peg one back and nearly did so in the 75th minute if not for Evan N'Dicka denying second-half substitute Boulaye Dia with some last-ditch defending.

Try as they did, Lazio were unable to find the back of the net in the dying embers of the match, with Roma banking all three points in a night that could propel them to renewed fortunes for the rest of the season.

A late red card shown to Valentín Castellanos after cooler heads failed to prevail in the final moments marred what was other a highly-entertaining affair.
