Roma Super-Sub Re-Ups His Contract After Crucial Goal

Eldor Shomurodov has found his niche at Roma this campaign after last year’s loan spell at Cagliari and several opportunities to leave again. The Uzbek talisman equalized versus Juventus last week and extended his contract with the Giallorossi a few days later, La Repubblica informs.

The striker is now tied to the capital club until 2027. It makes it more likely that he will stick around in the summer. It was also a financial maneuver to amortize his fee better. He was signed from Genoa for nearly €20M. In addition, he accepted a slight pay cut from 1.3M to €1M annually.

Shomurodov was on the verge of departing Roma to join Atlanta FC last summer. The transfer fell through due to a bureaucratic hiccup. Instead, he would have joined Venezia in January had the Giallorossi found another backup striker. In addition, he hit the net against Eintracht Frankfurt while the window was open, convincing Claudio Ranieri and the front office to keep him.

The 29-year-old is up to 6 goals and 3 assists this season. He’s two shy of his personal best. Since 2021, he has found the target ten times coming off the bench. Only Lautaro Martinez (16) and Pedro (11) have been productive after subbing in during the same stretch in Serie A.

Our Take on Roma and Shomurodov

It has taken a few years, but they are finally getting some bang for their buck after a disproportionate investment, since he was already seasoned when they brought him in. They should arguably pair him with Artem Dovbyk more often, as they are complementary.
