RB Leipzig dismiss head coach Marco Rose

RB Leipzig have dismissed head coach Marco Rose after Saturday’s defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach continued a worrying dip in form.

The 1-0 defeat at Borussia-Park means Leipzig have won just three of their last 11 competitive fixtures and slipped to sixth in the Bundesliga, being overtaken by Gladbach after the Matchday 27 result.

“We believed in the set-up with Marco and his team for a very long time and tried everything until the end to achieve a turnaround together. However, in view of the development and the lack of results, we are firmly convinced that we need a new impetus for the remaining games in order to achieve our goals for the season,” said managing director Marcel Schäfer on Sunday morning.

Rose, a Leipzig native, oversaw 125 matches in charge of Die Roten Bullen after taking the helm in September 2022. He boasts a record of 72 wins, 22 draws and 33 defeats, while also leading the club to a second DFB Cup crown and a maiden Supercup success, as well as twice qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

However, results this season have been inconsistent, with the team unable to manage back-to-back wins since December. Their eight fixtures in the Champions League’s league phase produced just one win (2-1 against Sporting Lisbon), but Leipzig are through to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, where they will visit VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.

With Rose’s assistants Alexander Zickler, Marco Kurth and Frank Geideck also removed from their positions, the club will announce shortly who will oversee the team for that semi-final and indeed the rest of the season.
